Angels of Creation Tile Panels
William Morris Art Tiles
In Angels of Creation, each day shows a corresponding number of angels, each holding a globe that correspond to the events of that day. The angel of the fifth day stands at the sea's edge strewn with seashells and holds a globe showing the waters and the birds and the living creatures that moveth:
And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
The angel of the sixth day actually shows both the sixth and seventh days. The angel holds a globe that shows Adam and Eve in the garden, with a foreshadowing of the downfall that is to come: The Tree of Knowledge and the coiled serpent appear slightly behind. The angel of the seventh day, the day of rest, sits at the feet of the others.
Jenny, Morris's older daughter who was 15 at the time the series was completed, posed for some of the angels. The last of the Angels of Creation was completed in 1876, the same year that Jenny's life was changed forever when her health began to deteriorate as she developed epilepsy. Jenny and her father were very close; Jenny had just passed her Cambridge Local examinations and would most likely have attended one of the women's colleges at either Oxford or Cambridge.
Each tile in these two panels from The Angels of Creation series by Sir Edward Burne-Jones is 8 inches square and has a matte finish. Many of the Burne-Jones designs were later implemented as stained glass. 'The Firm' (Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.) was commissioned to create a series of creation panels for a church in Staffordshire (see the stained glass implementation).
